Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

Vincent Brown was a third round pick for the San Diego Chargers in the 2011 NFL Draft.  In Brown’s last season at San Diego State University, he had 69 receptions, 1,352 yards and 10 touchdown receptions.  Brown finished his collegiate career with 209 receptions, 3,110 yards and 23 TD receptions.

Brown finished his rookie season with 19 receptions, 329 yards and two TD receptions in 12 games which included four starts.  Brown’s most productive game in 2011 was against the Oakland Raiders when he had five receptions, 97 yards and a TD reception.

Brown avoided questions about the possibility of being a starter for San Diego this year, but said that if a player does not want to start, there is no point in playing.

San Diego signed former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem to a four year deal worth $25.9 million on March 13, 2012 which ranks fourth among all Chargers in terms of average salary.  Meachem’s best season came in 2009 when he had 45 receptions, 722 yards and nine TD receptions.

Meachem missed practices this year because of injuries to his knee which he had surgery on during the off-season and did not play in last Thursday’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.  If Meachem is healthy, I expect him to begin the regular season as a starter along with WR Malcom Floyd.  Floyd led the NFL in yards per reception last season at 19.9 and led San Diego in receiving yards per game.

If history repeats itself, Brown will have an opportunity to start for San Diego in 2012 because Floyd missed six games in 2006, 10 games in 2007, three games in 2008, five games in 2010 and four games in 2011.

I expect Brown to make an impact at some point, and 2012 could be his year to make a name for himself on the Chargers whether he comes off the bench or starts.
