We’ve heard plenty of buzz lately about Alex Kovalev potentially being given an opportunity for a pro tryout from a couple of different teams, but it appears that the San Jose Sharks are beating them to the punch when it comes to giving old men a shot.
The Sharks are reportedly set to offer Sergei Samsonov a tryout for the season. That’s assuming there is a season.
Samsonov last appeared in the NHL in the 2010-2011 season, when he played with both the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers after a midseason trade. He had 40 points between the two teams, including 13 goals.
The undersized winger has had a solid NHL career that spanned 14 years and six different clubs, including one-year stints with the Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks. He was part of the Edmonton team that went to the Stanley Cup Finals, losing to his future club, the Carolina Hurricanes.
Samsonov wouldn’t be a major addition to the Sharks if he’s able to make the team, but he’d add some decent scoring depth to a team that could use some. He’s scored 20 goals four times in his career and reached the 70 point mark twice, both when he was with the Boston Bruins.
The early reports that Samsonov will officially be trying out with the team appeared to be premature as his agent indicated that they were talking with several teams about potentially trying out. But the Sharks appeared to at least offered him a tryout, it just remains to be seen if other teams that Samsonov would be more interested in will follow suit.
