England International Set for the MLS?

According to rumours circulating today David Bentley, the Spurs right-sided midfielder, is looking into a loan move to a ‘mystery club’ in the MLS.

“This is something that is really interesting for David, as it will also get him fit through the summer,” Rob Segal, Bentley’s agent, told MLSsoccer.com. “He would like to go there on loan as soon as possible.”

The player had been on loan at Birmingham last term, and was farmed out to West Ham recently, too, but has been out since October with a knee injury and would hope that playing some part in the MLS season would help him recover and get back to full fitness in time for the next European season.

Once labeled the ‘next David Beckham’ the midfielder netted himself a 2008 move to Tottenham from Blackburn, where he had had a stand out season, laying on several assists and garnering a large amount of praise. The 27-year-old also secured a place in the England team. He has 7 caps to date.

In recent years, however, he has been out of favor at White Heart Lane, sometimes appearing to give up when the game gets beyond him, petulantly waving his hands and scowling. What’s more, with Harry Redknapp’s tactics and a preference for Aaron Lennon when a 4-4-2 is used it is unlikely that Bentley could break back in to the squad when he is declared able.

So a loan move could be the tonic Bentley needs and he could put himself in the shop window again. Questions do need to be answered, though, if this is to play out like Bentley’s agent hopes it will.

Firstly: which MLS team is he in talks with?

Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, however: if Bentley does intend for this to be a short-term deal, where would a fully fit, rejuvenated David Bentley be wanted in Europe?
