LONDON, UK – They say that blood is thicker than water, in the case of Cardiff City forward Anthony Gerrard and his miss on a potential game-tying penalty kick in the Carling Cup against his cousin, Steve Gerrard of Liverpool, that is not the case of a family feud, but more like a family affair.

Gerrard would miss a potential game-tying penalty kick enabling Liverpool to hoist its first trophy since 2003—and eighth overall, the most all-time in English history.

In a Carling Cup final worthy of a dramatic ending, one could not ask for nothing more from five-time European champion in English Premier League titan, Liverpool and English Championship side, Cardiff City F.C.

In a game of contrasts between big and small, England vs Wales, and the chance of seeing a Welsh side win the prestigious Carling Cup for the first time since 1928, the plucky and scrappy Bluebirds would fall just short.

Cardiff City would take a 1-0 lead on a Joe Mason goal at the 19th minute, Liverpool would net the equalizer on a goal from forward Martin Skrtel at the 60th minute.

Both teams would be deadlocked a 1-1 in the extra time session before Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt would score for Liverpool at the 108’ minute to give the Reds a 2-1 lead.

Cardiff City would rally for a late score thanks to a goal from Ben Turner at the 118th minute, setting up the dramatic penalty kicks that would decide the Carling Cup winner.

During the penalty kicks, Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard and Charlie Adam would miss, while Cardiff’s Kenny Miller would fail to convert for the Bluebirds.

Don Cowie would net the first penalty kick and give Cardiff a 1-0 lead, Liverpool would tie the score at 1-1 on a Kuyt goal.

After a miss by Cardiff’s Rudy Gestede, Liverpool and Cardiff would exchange goals courtesy of Stewart Downing, Peter Whittingham and Glen Johnson before Anthony Gerrard’s miss of the net wide left.

After the miss, Steven—who also missed—would seek out and offer solace to Anthony in a touching moment worthy of true sportsmanship.

For Liverpool, it is their 41st trophy—most overall in English soccer, one more than Manchester United’s 40 and 14 more than Arsenal’s 27.
