“That which can be asserted without evidence,” Christopher Hitchens once said, “can be dismissed without evidence.”

Apply that logic to the claims of Londoner Arquimedes Nganga, a 46-year-old footballer who, according to The Guardian, insists that the Baptist Church ruined his chances of playing for Manchester United. According to the report, “Nganga has filed papers at the high court, accusing the leaders of the Baptist Union of Great Britain of destroying his social life, causing him ‘psychological harm’ and defrauding him of money through compulsory donations.” He insists that if it had not been for time wasted in the pews, he “could definitely have had a long career in the Premiership.”

It’s unclear here which claims are more baseless, those of Nganga or those of the church (and all churches in general), but nonetheless the general idea seems plausible enough; the church is advertising something that it clearly can’t deliver. Highlighting such a discrepancy between claims and evidence can only be helpful to advancing the cause of materialist logic. And while taking the Baptists to court might merely be a performance piece, I find it a highly entertaining one, if nothing else.
