Why Steven Gerrard Won’t Listen To Sven
US PRESSWIRE Steven Gerrard - by Ruaraidh Gillies

Sven-Goran Eriksson has never been known for his tact and diplomacy so it will come as no surprise to hear that the former England boss has voiced his opinion on Steven Gerrard’s future at Liverpool Football Club.

According to the Swede, Gerrard should look to engineer a move away from Liverpool if he is to win a Premier League title before his illustrious career comes to an end.

Eriksson said, “I don’t begrudge a good guy like Steven winning the Premier League, but maybe he needs to change clubs if he wants to have that title.”

So, should Gerrard listen to Sven?

Well, to answer that question, we need to first understand why footballers want to win trophies. I am not a professional footballer so I might be wrong here, but it seems to me that winning silverware instills a sense of pride and accomplishment in a man; without those innate emotions, a Premier League winners medal would just be a soulless piece of metal.

What Sven seems to have forgotten is that Steven Gerrard is a true son of Liverpool, having been born and raised in the city. Gerrard grew up adoring Anfield heroes such as Dalglish, Shankly, Paisley, and so many more.

Imagine then the sense of pride that must course through the veins of this local lad every time he pulls that red shirt on, placing the Liver bird upon his chest. Imagine the sense of fulfillment he enjoys every time he walks out onto the Anfield pitch, touching the “This Is Anfield” sign in the tunnel, with the captain’s armband wrapped around his sleeve.

Success for Steven Gerrard is not winning a Premier League medal at Chelsea or Man City. Success for Steven Gerrard is hearing the Kop chant his name every week as they acknowledge all that the local lad has done for the club and will continue to do for the club (he may yet win the Premier League with The Reds).

Historic games in Cardiff, Dortmund, Wembley, Istanbul, and many more have shaped the course of Steven Gerrard’s destiny. He will forever be a Scouser, and he will Never Walk Alone.
