Sad news in the NFL today as ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced that former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger passed away late Friday night at the age of 58–almost one year after being diagnosed with cancer. Heimerdinger was diagnosed with the disease last November.
It’s safe to say Heimerdinger’s passion for football was unbelievable considering he made the decision to delay the start of his treatment in the middle of the 2010 season so he could travel with the team and be on the sidelines in Houston for their Week 12 matchup against the Texans. Unfortunately, the organization let Heimerdinger go along with numerous other assistants after Mike Munchak took over as head coach after the 2010 season.
Heimerdinger put up a strong fight against cancer and was always well-respected by his peers–especially former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher.
“He was passionate about the fight, obviously because of his love for his family but what also drove him passionately was his desire to get back on the sideline,” said Fisher via ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. “He loved his family, he loved this game and all that came with it. We’ve lost a great one.”
Thoughts and prayers go out to the Heimerdinger family at this time.
