For years Kyle Field has been a landmark stadium in college football. Schools around the country have expanded their stadiums and may have, at least in the perception of the public, become louder stadiums based on their six figure seat capacity.

Well, it appears Texas A&M is not only joining the expansion club, but becoming it’s presidential member.

According to Brett Nauman of The Eagle, the expansion of Kyle Field will be on the agenda during the board of regents meeting this coming Monday.

The last time A&M expanded was in 1999, when they added seats to the North end zone to increase from 70,000 to the current capacity of 82,000. The proposed deal sounds great, but it would likely not happen for another 20 years and could cost anywhere from $100 to $200 million.

A record number of fans saw the Nebraska game in which over 91,000 were in attendance. Yea, I’d say we need some more seats.

The proposed plan would make Kyle Field in to a bowl like stadium with no roof. Six decks would be added to the South end zone in front of the new athletic complex, increasing the capacity to 115, 000, the largest football stadium in the country.

This begs the question, where would they put the jumbotron? Texas A&M built a huge wide screen HD jumbotron and stuck in in the South end zone, so this would have to either be gotten rid of completely, or the seats would have to be built around it.

Included in the expansion would be a lower bowl built behind the stands to make walking around easier, more restrooms and concession stands, and a parker garage between the stadium and Wellborn Rd.

The football stadium is not the only sport on the agenda. An indoor practice facility would also be built next to Kyle Field and would accommodate all sports, and Olsen Field would be tripled in capacity to keep up with the growing popularity of Women’s soccer and softball.

G Rollie White Coliseum would be destroyed in the proposed expansion, with the Volleyball team moving their games to Reed Arena, where the men and women’s basketball team call home.

  1. Brett Kaplan says:

I’ve been to Neyland Stadium for the largest game ever there (109k and change). Their home field was not nearly as loud as The Swamp (although I may be partially biased). Ben Hill Griffin Stadium seats about 90k+, but the stands are built almost vertical to trap the sound in. That’s why it’s the loudest stadium. If they build up instead of out, the homefield advantage will increase tenfold.

  2. Dennis says:

Never been to Neyland Stadium, nor the swamp. But have been to Kyle field dozens of times, most of those before the expansion in ’99.

What makes Kyle Field special is the Aggies. Students stand and cheer the whole game showing that great Aggie pride and support for our team. Having been to other stadiums that are ‘loud’ and found it somewhat hollow and disappointing that the ‘noise’ was reserved, for the most part, to key plays in the game.

After all, it is ‘The Spirit of Aggieland’ that makes Kyle Field special in a sea of concrete bowls with vertically enhanced sound traps. So whatever plans are made for Kyle Field’s renovation, hope they keep that tradition in mind.

    GiG ‘EM!! AGGIES!!
