In tonight’s 46-14 win over the SMU Mustangs, the Fightin’ Texas Aggie defense was anything but dominant for a while, but was able to get it together eventually.

The first half was flat out embarrassing; the only time the Wrecking Crew was able to stop SMU was when they shot themselves in the foot with poor throws.

On their first two possessions starter Kyle Padron threw terrible balls to wide open receivers that were intercepted, and after backup J.J. McDermott carved them up for two scores, the only thing that prevented SMU from taking the lead was a bad pass to a wide open receiver that led to a punt.

Oh, and did I mention RB Zach Line was running through holes big enough for my Tundra 4×4?

After that first punt, it became a different story. The Aggie offense scored to push the lead to 27-14, then forced a three and out that led to another score to bring it to 33-14 just before halftime.

Still, the concerns for the defense were there, and they were all but wiped away in the second half.

After getting pushed around, the defensive line finally started making plays against the run, and SMU receivers stopped being 10 yards open.

Obviously whatever Tim DeRuyter said at halftime worked.

There isn’t much to say about the offense. Ryan Tannehill was deadly proficient, Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael combined for over 200 yards behind the biggest offensive line in Aggie history, and Ryan Swope ate up the SMU secondary.

They backed off in the second half, but they scored touchdowns on five of their six drives in the first half, only punting once.

It was the tale of two halves, sort of, but in the end they came away with a dominant win like a top 10 team is supposed to.
