According to Aggie Athletics, Texas A&M University has officially been accepted in to the Southeastern Conference. They will be official members of the league on July 1, 2012 with all sports joining the conference for the 2012-2013 seasons.

This move has been unofficially official for a long time, with Baylor being the main thorn in the Aggies’ sides. Apparently they finally consented to signing a waiver and will not be suing anyone.

Thanks Baylor, now go back to never being talked about.

“The Southeastern Conference Presidents and Chancellors are pleased to welcome Texas A&M University to the SEC family,” said Dr. Bernie Machen, both chair of the SEC board and Florida’s president. “The addition of Texas A&M University as the SEC’s 13th member gives our league a prestigious academic institution with a strong athletic tradition and a culture similar to our current institutions.”

This move makes sense on every level. According to the Aggie Athletics article, Texas A&M has over 50,000 students, ranking them No. 6 in the US. Not only that, but despite the recent decade of struggles by the football program, no school has been better than Texas A&M in terms of all around athletics.

No school in the Big 12 had more Big 12 Championships and National Championships than A&M in the past five years.

Not only that, but A&M just fits the cultural aspect of the SEC. They have many schools similar to A&M with it’s rich tradition and deep southern morals. This is a perfect fit in every sense of the word.

“The Southeastern Conference provides Texas A&M the national visibility that our great university and our student-athletes deserve,” said Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin. “We are excited to begin competition in the nation’s premier athletic conference. This is a 100-year decision that we have addressed carefully and methodically, and I believe the Southeastern Conference gives the Aggies the best situation of any conference in the country.”
