For the past couple of seasons, the wide receiver position is one that has been incredibly inconsistent for the Texas Longhorns.

Last year, with sub-par quarterback play, the Texas receivers weren’t asked to do much, and when they were, you never really knew what you were going to get, outside of true freshman, Jaxon Shipley.

However, once Jaxon went down with an injury, forcing him to miss several games, the remaining wide receivers were very inconsistent overall. No one seemed to want to step up and fans got tired of seeing drop after drop after drop.

But it’s a new year, and the Longhorns are hoping to see some improvement at the position.

This season, as fall camp begins, Jaxon has been–well–Jaxon. If he can stay healthy, there is little doubt he will be the Horns’ lead receiver this fall. In fact, he very well may prove to be one of the best in the nation. Additionally, junior Mike Davis, who has incredible potential, has been showing more consistency than in years past as well.  However, it’s the group of freshmen receivers that have really turning some heads these last few days.

The freshmen trio of Cayleb Jones,  Marcus Johnson, and Kendall Sanders are garnering heaps of praise for their play so far this fall camp, forcing the coaches, and the upperclassmen, to take notice. These three will certainly be fighting for playing time early in the season.

Beyond Jones, Johnson, and Sanders freshmen running backs Johnathan Gray and Daje Johnson have also been used in the passing game as well. Offensive coordinator Bryan Harsen is throwing them lots of different looks, and so far, they’ve excelled in his offense. Expect these two RBs to be huge contributors in the passing game as well. They are both strong, they have good hands, and both are ridiculously fast.

In order for the Texas offense to get back on track, it’s crucial that the wide receivers step up this season. If these early practices are any indication, the wide receiving corps could end up being one of the strongest positions on the team, thanks in large part to a solid group of incoming freshmen.
