Last season, under new offensive-coordinator Bryan Harsin, the Texas Longhorns offense relied heavily on the “Wildcat” formation, or better known in Texas as the “Wildhorn.”

Early in the season, senior running back Fozzy Whittaker ran the Wildhorn to near perfection, so well that he scored nearly every time he lined up directly under center. However, after Whittaker suffered a season-ending knee injury, the Longhorns were never quite able to run it nearly as efficiently as they had under Fozzy.

This year, sources close to the program claim that Harsin and head-coach Mack Brown are looking to use true freshman quarterback, Jalen Overstreet in the formation.

Overstreet is one of two incoming quarterbacks in the freshman class, along with Connor Brewer. There have been some rumblings that Brewer may redshirt this season, leaving Overstreet to back up fellow QBs David Ash and Case McCoy.

But if sources are correct, the 6-foot-2, 214 lb. freshman could be more than a back-up; there is a good change he will make an immediate impact.

As a dual threat quarterback, Overstreet brings an additional element to the Wildhorn formation that was not used very often last year. As effective as Whittaker was, he was never considered much of a threat to throw the ball out of the formation (though in fairness, it wasn’t needed too often). However, as a quarterback who has the ability to also run the ball, Overstreet offers the offense more options.

Last season at Tatum High School in Tatum, TX, Overstreet threw for 1,471 yards and 13 touchdowns. He added 1,190 yards on the ground with 23 rushing touchdowns in just 185 carries.

Though many originally thought Overstreet would either end up changing positions at some point during his collegiate career or stuck behind a long line of quarterbacks, it appears that he may indeed make an impact at quarterback for the Texas Longhorns, and much sooner than many expected.
