The Vancouver Canucks have traded a Calder trophy candidate in Cody Hodgson and Alex Sulzer to the Buffalo Sabres for Zack Kassian and Marc-Andre Gragnani. “I’m still in shock right now,” a stunned Hodgson told TSN in a telephone interview. “It’s tough to leave Vancouver … it’s a great city, very passionate about its hockey.”
Kassian, who was also interviewed by TSN, thanked the Sabres organization and the fans in Buffalo for their support.
“I’m stunned,” Kassian said of the trade. “I’m very excited to go and contend for a Cup now.”
Kassian is a 21-year-old who played in the 2009-10 Memorial Cup with the Widsor Spitfires, who won the championship that year. Earlier that season, he was suspended 20 games for his hit to the head of Barrie Colts forward Matt Kennedy. Kassian got a major penalty for charging and a game misconduct. Hodgson was selected 10th overall in 2008. Kassian went 13th overall in 2009. Hodgson was a highly skilled player and former Canadian major junior player of the year. He was named rookie of the month for January. Kennedy got a concussion and needed stitches. Only time will tell on who won this deal.
