How Good Can Calvin Johnson be Without Broken Fingers?

Calvin Johnson is a beast. The man with the nickname Megatron broke Jerry Rice‘s single-season receiving yards record this past season, but you knew that back in February when our very own Dan Parzych reported it, yet now it’s “breaking news” here in May. Since it’s actually old news, let’s take a look at how good Johnson can be this year with healthy hands.

The man was on the cover of Madden NFL ’13, which means he was cursed, thus the broken fingers. However, that obviously didn’t stop him as he hauled in 122 passes, tied for third-best all-time and he was targeted a whopping 205 times. The Detroit Lions had a very disappointing season and played from behind a lot, hence all the passing. Still, a more balanced game plan could actually increase Johnson’s targets.

With a new weapon in Reggie Bush to take some pressure off Matthew Stafford and fingers that aren’t broken, Johnson could easily become the first receiver to crack 2,000 yards in a season. He was only 36 yards short of that mark in 2012 and that was with fingers that didn’t straighten out all the way. If you think he was good last year, Megatron could be scary good this year.
