One of the last remaining NBA free agents signed a two-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers. Despite reported interest from the Miami Heat, Mo Williams has agreed to be the newest addition to the Trail Blazers’ roster. Oddly enough, this is going to be one of the few times in Williams’ career when he is going to be playing tutor.
Portland has a very young backcourt with Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum both expected to play huge minutes for the club in 2013. These two players have a combined one year of NBA experience, so the Trail Blazers’ management was smart in signing a grizzled veteran like Williams. In addition, the former Cleveland Cavaliers guard has been on fantastic NBA teams and not so fantastic teams, which means he knows exactly what it takes to excel at the professional level.
At this point in his career, Williams is still a threat off of the dribble as he averaged 12.9 points per game for the Utah Jazz last season. However, father time may be catching up to this guard as Williams has missed considerable amounts of time in each of the last seasons. Not to mention, the 592 points that Williams scored in 2012 is the lowest such mark that he’s posted since his rookie year way back in 2004.
Moreover, Williams’ impact in Portland won’t be solely measured by points or field goal percentage; instead, it will be gauged by how well Lillard and McCollum play and whether or not they mature both on and off of the court.
