Jon Heyman is reporting that the Washington Nationals are still very much in the mix and possibly the favorites for Prince Fielder.

#nationals definitely in mix. must have loosened alleged early 6-yr stance. in final few. no deal yet, tho. #prince

According to Heyman the fact that the Nationals are still in the running means Washington has soften its stance of offering no more than six years because it appears Fielder is expected to get a seven or eight year deal.
fielder expected to get AT LEAST 7 yr contract, and perhaps 8. #prince

It’s suprising to see Fielder still on the market but many teams have been scared off due to several factors including his weight and lack of ability to play any other position but first – which makes the low number of National League suitors less suprising.  As of yesterday it looked like the Nationals and two American League clubs – the Rangers and Orioles were believed to be the last teams in the Fielder sweepstakes. However, today Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting that the Rangers believe they are out of the Fielder talks and talks with Washington is heating up.

Another school of thought thrown out by ESPN’s Buster Only has him suggesting Fielder take a one year deal and hit the free agent market at the top bat in 2013 -

Martinez makes $13 m; if DET recoups 75 pct. through insurance,a 1-yr. deal with Prince costs $16m or so, in effect. Again:Just speculation.

.  If that was the direction he goes – which is extremely unlikely – it could be difficult to see Fielder getting more than he would now because he would be a year older and the the possibility of injury or a sub-par 2012 leaves to much to chance.

As of right now Washington look to be the favorites, which could make the Nationals one of the favorites to come out of the National League East.
