The Redskins Make A Few Roster Moves, None Of Them At Quarterback
Just in case you haven’t been paying attention to the happenings at Redskins Park due to the lingering hangover of another bad loss, I wanted to keep you up to date.
The big roster news this week in the NFL was the releasing of Patriots defensive tackle, Albert Haynesworth. I smiled a little bit when I saw that one, just as I did when Donovan McNabb got benched a few weeks ago.
Both of those moves mean Mike Shanahan and the Redskins finally got something right. They got a sixth round pick for McNabb and a fifth round pick for Haynesworth, and neither players are helping the teams they went to. Little victories, friends. Little victories.
Anyway, here’s what’s been going on with the Redskins, other than bad football.
- Cornerback Phillip Buchanon was placed on injured reserve due to his ailing neck. He missed the first four games due to suspension and never saw the field due to injury. It’s curious that they put him on IR instead of cutting him. They must be expecting him to return next season.
- Donte’ Stallworth was released and replaced on the roster by wide receiver David Anderson who played in Houston under ‘Skins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Anderson’s (5’10”, 190 lbs) best season came in 2009 when he caught 38 passes for 370 yards. They’ll probably try to use him in the slot.
- Rookie cornerback Brandyn Thompson, who has been cut and resigned a couple times already, was released again this week. He was replaced by Dominique Johnson (6’2”, 190 lbs) , a third year corner out of Jackson State.
- Also released were defensive end Darion Scott, tight end Dominique Byrd, and running back Tristan Davis.
- To replace Scott, the redskins signed defensive end Kentwan Balmer. This was, by far, the most interesting move of the week. Balmer (6’5”, 315 lbs) is the former 29th overall pick (2008) out of North Carolina by the San Francisco 49ers. He never lived up to his first round potential, having played for the Carolina Panthers in addition to San Francisco.
The Redskins travel to Miami this week to take on the 1-7 Dolphins who just beat down the Kansas City Chiefs 31-3. John Beck returns for the first time to the team that drafted and later released him. Maybe he’ll have some extra motivation and play better. Here’s hoping.
