Washington Redskins Need To Address Offensive Line In Free Agency

Now that the Washington Redskins have made their decision at quarterback, in trading up to get Baylor’s Heisman Trophy-winning signal-caller Robert Griffin III, it’s time to try and put a team around him. The best way to start is for the team to target the offensive line in the free agency period that starts Tuesday afternoon at 4 PM ET.

Free agency is the clear means of improvement now, with the ‘Skins second-round pick traded as part of the RG3 package, and first-round picks in the next two years also gone. Fortunately, the flexibility Washington enjoys is among the best in the league with regard to the salary cap, so perhaps Washington owner Daniel Snyder’s free-spending ways can now be turned to the team’s advantage.

New Orleans guard Carl Nicks is the best offensive lineman on the market, and you can make an argument that he’s the most valuable free agent on the board. If you’re uncomfortable with Peyton Manning’s health and to a lesser extent, that of defensive end Mario Williams, is there anyone who’s clearly a cut above Nicks? With the Saints needing to committ big dollars to Drew Brees, Nicks likely ends up somewhere else.

Then there’s center Chris Myers in Houston. At age 30, he doesn’t have the same longevity as the 26-year-old Nicks, but Myers is still a solid and stabilizing force in the offensive line.

Nicks and Myers are the best two offensive lineman on the board, and it seem wishful thinking that the same team could get them both. But if that team has cap room and a clear willingness to spend the money, then why not?

Either way, the need at wide receiver can wait. Nothing’s better for a young quarterback–for that matter any quarterback–then to *not* have defensive lineman barrelling down on him. Myers and Nicks can shore up the interior, help the running game and give head coach Mike Shanahan a real building block as they join with Robert Griffin III to move this organization forward.

One Rant to “Washington Redskins Need To Address Offensive Line...”

  1. luke says:

I couldn’t agree more. Problem is, the redskins will never properly address the O-line. They haven’t figured out the importance of solid blocking and the value of a quarterback with time.
They obviously learned nothing from Jacoby, Grimm, and Butts

what a complete joke of a franchise….every year they become the laughing stock of the league….why will this year be any different
