The safety position is not a position of strength for the Washington Redskins, and on Monday the position took another hit when Brandon Meriweather came down awkwardly on his knee. “He [Brandon] has a sprained MCL injury,” coach Shanahan said. “He will be out from 2-4 weeks. He feels a little more optimistic than that, but the doctors felt that it would take a little bit of time.”

With safety Tanard Jackson already out for the year, after being suspended for banded substance abuse, the Washington Redskins are left with a shaky situation on the back-end of their defense. “We have four safeties left and five corners so we will come up with the best combination to try to slow down the Saints,” Shanahan said during his Monday presser. “You’re obviously disappointed when you lose two safeties or two guys you thought could start. Of course, you are obviously disappointed with Tanard Jackson and Brandon Meriweather, but that is why you have depth. We felt like we had six safeties that could play. We went out and got an extra cornerback because we needed some extra depth at the cornerback position.”

With Meriweather out, this gives second year safety DeJon Gomes an opportunity to fill-in, as he did several times during his rookie season. Shanahan calls Gomes a natural football player who is very smart and has improved a lot from last year.

Washington will need their front 7 to dominate as the secondary could be the defense’s Achilles heel this season.
