On Sunday, the agent of quarterback Joe Flacco met with Baltimore Ravens front office personnel to discuss a long-term deal for his client.

“It was good to meet with [GM] Ozzie [Newsome] and [VP of administration] Pat [Moriarty] in person,” Flacco’s agent Joe Linta said. “We’ll continue to get at this as we go along here.”

As of now, no deal has been struck. The cordial, friendly tone of the ongoing talks, though, can lead one to believe that an agreed will be worked out well before Flacco becomes a free agent at the end of the 2012 NFL season. Talks are going strong, which bodes well for the top-flight quarterback’s future with the Ravens.

The attention turned to Flacco earlier this offseason after Ravens star running back Ray Rice received a long-term deal in the waning moments before the deadline hit for teams to sign their franchise players on July 16.

Flacco is carrying an $8 million cap hit heading into the 2012 season. With Rice’s deal done and some room created between their salary and the cap, the Ravens now have some leeway. Linta, however, has made it clear that any cap concerns wouldn’t hold up contract talks.

There appears to be no deadline in mind from either side as contract talks continue to move slowly yet steadily. Even at this pace, it’s likely that the Ravens will have locked down Flacco by the middle of the regular season.

An extension is all but assured, so no need for Ravens fans to worry about Flacco abandoning ship at season’s end.
