Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

Last year, Purdue star forward Robbie Hummel was forced sit out and redshirt his senior year because he tore his right ACL for the second time in 7 months. The Purdue community and its team were obviously devastated by this news. The effect of his injury were felt by his competitors- especially Michigan State captain Draymond Green.

Green reached out to his rebounding rival last year via text wishing him well and supporting his efforts. ”He was down, but you could tell guys were in his ear trying to keep his spirits up,” Said Green. “”He was definitely down. Then when it happened the second time, I got back in touch with him, and his spirits were great. I just wanted to wish him well.”

“Robbie’s a hard worker,” Green said. “You never want to see a guy go through what he went through, especially a guy who works that hard. He has a great story. He hasn’t been playing as well lately as he was at the start of the season, but for him to be doing what he’s doing after two knee surgeries and missing the whole year is amazing.”

Tom Izzo also commented on Hummels comeback saying” ”Is he quite the same step?” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo asked. “I would say maybe he struggles on that first step a little bit compared to what he did and maybe rebounding here and there compared to what he did. But Robbie Hummel has always been one of my favorite players in the league, and what he’s done and what he’s gone through, he remains. He’s a big reason why they’re a contender right now.”

The comments and the support shown from Izzo and Green indicate the high level of respect Big Ten teams have for one another. No matter what team you’re a fan of, you have to root for Robbie Hummel in his return to an elite Big 10 player. His perseverance and dedication to the game is just another example of College Hoops being one of the most passionately played games.

The 14-5 Boilermakers travel to East Lansing to face the 15-4 Michigan State Spartans tomorrow. One of the biggest story lines coming into this game has to be the struggle for Big Ten teams on the road. But, Purdue has a chance to pull off the upset if they can contend with the Spartans on the boards.

On the other side the Spartans are looking to bounce back from back-to-back losses for the first time since they lost to North Carolina and Duke.

Check out the game at 12 et on ESPN tomorrow.
