Saban Not Giving Michigan Any Pointers on New Offense
Alabama completed spring practice on Saturday with the White team knocking off the Crimson team, 24-15, with over 78,000 fans in attendance to witness it.
It was also Alabama’s final spring practice under new offensive coordinator, Doug Nussmeier, who will call the plays this fall. Nussmeier joined Sabin’s staff after serving as Washington’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach the past three seasons.
Even with a new coordinator, the Crimson’s Tide offense isn’t expected to change much, if at all in 2012. And even it has changed, Saban wasn’t about to show his cards during the spring game.
Beating Michigan on September 1st to open the season at the Cowboy’s Stadium will be tough enough the way it is.
Saban was asked in his post game press conference on Saturday how much of the offense in the spring game was new. In typical Saban style, he was fairly point blank (7:45 mark in the video link).
“You didn’t see anything new. Unless you want us to just email Michigan what we’re doing and anything new that we’re doing. So what do you think you saw that was new? Did you see anything that was new? If I saw anything new out there, I would have been upset. So, there was nothing new.”
Sorry Brady Hoke. It looks like you and Greg Mattison will have to spend some time in the offseason pouring over tape of both Alabama and Washington. Not that they’re probably all that surprised by that, however.
About the only nugget Saban divulged was that they’ll adapt their offense to fit their personnel adding, “Doug has got some new ideas about things he likes to do and I like those ideas and we’ll do some of those things a little bit differently.”
Alabama is coming off its second BCS championship in the past three seasons while Michigan enters 2012 on the heels of an 11 win season and a Sugar Bowl victory over Virginia Tech. Both teams are expected to debut in the preseason top 10 which will be officially released in August.
The season opener will be only the fourth time the two schools have met on the football field, although it will be the first ever match up in the regular season. The last time they met was in the 2000 Orange Bowl when some guy named Tom Brady led the Wolverines to a 35-34 overtime victory.
Not a bad way to get the 2012 season rolling.
