Big East Football: Conference With Two Representatives in Senior Bowl

Not surprisingly, the Big East will not be well represented at the Senior Bowl next weekend in Mobile, Alabama. The two lone representatives coming out of the conference are Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead and Connecticut defensive tackle Kendall Reyes.

Both players will be representing the North squad, which is coached by Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier.

The selection is certainly no surprise for Pead who is one of four running backs on the roster and was the Big East offensive player of the year.

Reyes is more of a surprise, particularly because he was taken over fellow defensive tackle Derek Wolfe of Cincinnati.

Wolfe was the Big East co-defensive player of the year and while Reyes was a first-team all-Big East selection, Wolfe was much more productive last season, earning second-team All-American honors for the second consecutive year.

But, Reyes may have more athleticism which translates into success at the next level and that is what the senior bowl is all about.

With most of the major conferences filled with players, the Big East will only have two to show off to the rest of the country.

A number of teams have more players than the eight-team Big East. That certainly says something about the way the conference has shaken out the past few years, but also talks about the youth of the league.

There are a lot of talented underclassmen that will certainly be playing in this game in the coming years, but for now the league will have to rely on their lone two representatives to get a little notoriety.

It could certainly happen. After all, it was only two years ago that Cincinnati wide receiver Mardy Gilyard was named offensive MVP of the game.
