I preface this post with the following information that shows my affinity for “The Captain” Paul Pierce. Pierce is the guy I associate with my generation of Celtics. He was the guy I paid to watch during the lean years and into respectability in the late 90s to mid 2000s. It was Pierce and his ability to score anywhere on the court that made the game fun to watch. I loved his competitive fire despite the lack of talent early on. However, that competitive fire needs to go away right now. I truly believe that Pierce is hurting a lot more than helping the situation right now. If he continues his path that he is on right now and the players are stupid enough to follow, then the NBA will be in serious trouble and a ton of money will be lost on both sides. The problem is the side hurt the most will be the players due to Pierce’s actions.
Pierce recently got on the phone and made phone calls to NBA players trying to get everyone on the same page to decertify the union. This is by far the dumbest move the players could make. This will cancel the NBA season and cause some serious damage tot he revenue structure. Pierce needs to understand the loss of revenue is going to be the burden of the players and not the owners. The owners OWN the league. Hence they make the rules. The owners made a mistake and gave the players way to high of a revenue share last deal. 57 percent percent is absurd and has caused a major competitive imbalance. They are now going to fix that problem and the players will have to cave sooner or later. The problem is the later it gets the worse the deal will be for the players.The TV deal worth a ton of money is going to pay less due to the fact the TV deal will be renegotiated. The fans will not be buying the merchandise to pad the revenue stream. This means a smaller pie for the players to have a bite out of. This means 51 percent of this current pie will be worth more than 53 percent of the future pot with a cancelled NBA season.
Pierce needs to sit down and really understand the situation. In the future the players can get back the two percent. The owners were dumb enough to give them 57 percent before. The players have had a few years of getting more than they should. Now, they should take their medicine now and avoid a harsher dose. If they do not follow Pierce this time, they will be better off. The future of the NBA is in their hands and i pray they make the right call. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!!!!!
