There’s been a great deal of buzz all summer about this Chicago Bears offense, and with good reason.
It wouldn’t be a stretch at all to say that this is the best the Bears’ offense has ever been, from top to bottom. Or at least in a few decades. It has multiple dimensions, with a dual threat of Matt Forte and Michael Bush in the backfield, as well as a very talented group of receivers headlined by new guy Brandon Marshall.
But any way you slice it, no matter how much you break it down, it’s all going to come down to one guy: Jay Cutler.
Last season, we saw Jay play some of the best football of his career. Had a thumb injury in the second half of the season against the San Diego Chargers, on a really silly play, not ended his season, it’s very possible that he could have been in the MVP discussion. And he did that with an awful offensive system and a group of skill players that couldn’t hold a candle to what they have now, in the roles that they were in.
Now Cutler comes into a season with a simpler system, more weapons than ever, and the underrated aspect of having Jeremy Bates in the fold as the quarterbacks coach. The rest is going to be up to him. But can he live up to the hype and enter the ranks of the elite? You bet he can.
We saw Jay Cutler begin his ascent last season and he won over an entire city with the way he played. He’s always had the physical tools to be an excellent quarterback in the National Football League. He just needed the right components around him, which he now does.
If this team stays healthy, they are a threat for the Super Bowl. And with so many weapons around him, both running the ball and for him to find in the passing game, as well as a system that will mix things up and utilize Cutler’s strengths (including his underrated mobility), there are no excuses.
But if last year was any indication, Jay Cutler could rise and regain some of that momentum he was gaining for MVP consideration in 2011. It’s very possible that for the first time in their history, when all is said and done this year, the Chicago Bears could have a quarterback that carries the “elite” label.
