Rant and Rise: Joe Mauer Clears Waivers, Allen Pinkett Apologizes, Roger Clemens Earns Another Start

Here’s the latest addition of Rant and Rise for August 30, 2012.

Joe Mauer Clears Waivers

It should be no surprise that Mauer cleared waivers after he was placed on them by the Minnesota Twins considering the former MVP is nowhere near the elite level he was at back in 2009. No playoff contender is going to want to bring Mauer and his hefty $184 million contract on board considering he’s only hit eight home runs on the season and has struggled at the plate over the last couple of years.

After the blockbuster trade last weekend between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox, the Twins were curious to see if any teams would jump at the chance for Mauer–but that obviously wasn’t the case.

Allen Pinkett Apologizes For Controversial Comments

On Wednesday, former Notre Dame running back and current radio analyst Pinkett made some interesting comments during an interview in which he basically discussed how he believes “bad citizens” and “criminals” are good for football teams as they give them an edge and build chemistry. Obviously, Notre Dame must not have been too thrilled over these comments as Pinkett has apologized for his comments–but that doesn’t take away from the fact that he still said them.

Roger Clemens Earns Another Start

After pitching 3 1/3 innings and only allowing one hit last week, Clemens has earned another start for the Sugar Land Skeeters and will pitch on September 7. The 50-year-old Clemens has been out of the game for five years, but it should be interesting to see if a team like the Houston Astros considers bringing him in September to fill up some of the seats in their stadium.
