Report: Juan Castillo to Remain as Philadelphia Eagles Defensive Coordinator
Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

According to sources, Juan Castillo will return as the defensive coordinator next season for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Castillo was named the defensive coordinator last season after being the offensive line coach for 13 seasons. He had been under fire all season long after the self-proclaimed “dream team” went on several losing streaks, with the worst being a four-game streak from week two to five, and eventually missing the playoffs.

It got so bad there was a rumor circling around late in the season that head coach Andy Reid would have to admit that it was a mistake to make Juan Castillo the defensive coordinator and fire him to keep his own job.

It was a risky move by Reid that no one in the football world, including Eagles players themselves, could understand. According to big-time acquisition cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, there was no confidence in Castillo’s calls the first few weeks of the season because of his non-existent defensive background, but towards the end of the season they began to buy into his system and play better. It is assumed this happened around week 14 when Philadelphia went on a four-game winning streak to end the season.

There is no doubt Castillo deserves some of the blame for the disappointing year but to put the entire disastrous season on him is absolutely ridiculous. The fans never gave him much of a chance, the team never fully believed in him and in reality the defensive standings were not that bad. The Eagles finished 10th in the NFL in opponent passing yards and 16th in opponent rushing yards. They were also first in the league in defensive touchdowns with three and sacks with 50.

Philadelphia recently hired former Miami Dolphins assistant head coach/secondary turned interim head coach Todd Bowles to be the new cornerbacks coach.
