New Era Promo Features Cubs Fan Ron Swanson and White Sox Fan Darryl Philbin

In my humble opinion, NBC shows Parks and Recreation and the Office are two of the finer comedic offerings on primetime television.

The writers from both shows have done a brilliant job of developing characters over the years that we not only care about, but also can relate with. Two of these characters are Ron Swanson (played by Nick Offerman), the enigmatic and meat-loving “boss” from Parks and Recreation, and Darryl Philbin (played by Craig Robinson), the voice of reason in an otherwise chaotic paper company.

Clothing company New Era has used Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski in past ads with a distinctly more Northeastern feel– in particular as rival New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox fans– but this time around decided to go more Midwestern, pitting Swanson as a loyal Chicago Cubs fan against Robinson as a loyal Chicago White Sox fan.

The resulting one-on-one conversation is hilarious:

There’s little love lost between Cubs fans and White Sox fans, but also an underlying mutual respect when it comes to protection of the city of Chicago, like the slander about its pizza not being as good as any from the Big Apple.

2012 should be an interesting season for both the White Sox and Cubs. Most experts have the White Sox placed toward the bottom of the AL Central, while the Cubs project about the same.

Since expectations are limited, fans of both teams (who are mired in “rebuilding” processes) will need all the bright little moments they can find to stay sane during the dog days of the coming summer.

For now, they have New Era to thank for giving them the first.
