The St. Paul Saints of the American Association have decided to take advantage of their namesake’s poor fortune and have developed their own “bounties for hits” scheme to benefit the charity Childrens’ Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

The promotion, set to take place on September 1st, will award the following monetary amounts to the charity based on the what the Saints do on the diamond:

For each bone crunching hit the Saints will collect a bounty and the bigger the hit, the larger the sum: a single is worth $100, a double $200, a triple $300 and a home run is worth $400. For every pitcher the Saints “knock-out” another $50 will be collected. Each time a Saints pitcher “punches out” an opposing hitter, $10 will be donated.

At the end of the night all the money collected from the bounty system will be placed in a LOOMIS armored truck and taken to Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota and donated to their new concussion research program.

Minor league sports in general, and minor league baseball in particular, depends heavily on the success of promotions like this one to not only engender goodwill in the community and build a fan base, but also to get people outside of the community where they are located to talk about the team.

Good minor league General Managers have a wealth of these ideas in the back of their minds at all times– it’s one of the job elements which may not be included in the description but is undeniably essential to team success on a shoestring budget.

Kudos to the Saints for spinning a negative situation into a huge positive for the children of Minnesota.

In this case, bounties are a big plus.
