Reports: NBA Commissioner David Stern To Retire After 2013-2014 Season
Kim Klement- US PRESSWIRE

NBA commissioner David Stern is a contentious figure. Depending on who you ask, he has either led the NBA into a new tier of popularity and success, or set it back by generations.

Regardless, no one has a muted opinion of the league’s long-time leader.

Reports released today suggest Stern will be at the helm of the world’s most popular professional basketball league for at least two more seasons, presumably to step aside following the 2013-2014 NBA campaign.

Along with NBA Players Association president Billy Hunter, and players’ representative Derek Fisher, Stern was mired in a contentious negotiation over the most recent incarnation of the league’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, finally reaching a deal in time to allow for a 66 game regular season in 2012. This achievement alone was enough for Stern to maintain a positive reputation in the eyes of most close to the game, however, some still think blame of the original lockout fell at his feet.

There is no doubt to be had regarding Stern’s replacement– league deputy commissioner Adam Silver is the de facto replacement for Stern, although a formal replacement has yet to be named.

According to the New York Daily News, Stern plans to wait until the NBA Board of Governors meetings in April to make a formal announcement that he will step down after the 2013-2014 season and Silver will be his replacement. Silver stood by Stern’s side throughout the CBA negotiations and will be prepared for even more contentious negotiations to take place when the current CBA expires 10 years from now.

The NBA has enjoyed unprecedented popularity during David Stern’s tenure, the means he used to get there are debatable.

What isn’t debatable is David Stern’s presence– it is larger than the game itself and will be remembered as such.
