Since Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith retired, no Dallas Cowboys running back left his mark on the franchise until rookie DeMarco Murray did so in resounding fashion during Sunday’s 34-7 win over the St. Louis Rams. The Cowboys are known as a passing team, but Murray provided an easy win on the ground, rushing for a franchise single-game record 253 yards on 25 carries, including a touchdown.
The fireworks began on Murray’s first carry as he sprinted straight up the middle, eluded Rams safety Quintin Mikell and galloped 91 yards for a touchdown. Murray was awarded a feature role because starter Felix Jones missed the game with a high ankle sprain. Needless to say, Murray didn’t disappoint.
Murray averaged over 10 yards per carry during the game, an insane number for a running back at any level. To make things more conservative, let’s take away Murray’s 91-yard scoring dash. On his remaining 24 carries, he racked up 162 yards for a remaining average of 6.75 yards per carry.
The Cowboys have finally found a workhorse running back to lean on. Although he’s only had one big day, Murray could possibly be Dallas’ best third-round draft pick in franchise history if he’s truly as good as Sunday’s performance would suggest. Breaking one of Smith’s records in only his sixth game as a pro is nothing to scoff at; after all, Smith is the NFL’s all-time leading rusher.
