Dallas Cowboys Should Sign Mario Manningham if Laurent Robinson Leaves
The Dallas Cowboys absolutely need to re-sign free agent receiver Laurent Robinson this off-season. That’s a fact, plain and simple. He was the team’s most reliable receiver in 2011 and the top red zone target for Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. However, there’s not a good vibe around Valley Ranch regarding Robinson’s status in Dallas. If he walks, the Cowboys should target New York Giants receiver Mario Manningham as the new No. 3 option in Dallas.
Manningham isn’t the most consistent receiver in the world, but Dallas wouldn’t need him to be the No. 1 or No. 2 guy. His quick, underneath-route ability and occasional big-play capability match the description of the ideal No. 3 NFL receiver. He has been known to drop a few balls, but he made the game-clinching catch in the Super Bowl, something Cowboys receivers have only dreamt about.
The Cowboys would be most suited to re-sign Robinson, who has seemingly found a home in Dallas after short stints with the Atlanta Falcons and St. Louis Rams. He only started four games for the Cowboys in 2011, but finished third on the team in receiving yards with 858, first in receiving touchdowns with 11 and third in receptions with 54.
Manningham fits in perfectly with the Giants’ three-receiver look, but he’ll be looking for greener pastures as a free agent this off-season. While being the No. 3 guy in Dallas may not suit him, you never know. Regardless, Jerry Jones better at least give Manningham a phone call if he’s dumb enough to let Robinson leave. The Cowboys’ offense has the potential to be the NFL’s best in 2012 with a healthy DeMarco Murray. However, the No. 3 receiver plays a huge role in that process, as Robinson showed this past season.
