The Kyrie Irving Fantasy Effect
By Adam McGill
When LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers’, or Daniel Gibson as it would be, decided to part ways two years ago, it was far from amicable. Both sides refused to take the higher ground and a vicious twitter war ensued, where they both said things that I am sure they now regret. However, this move immediately left Cleveland at the bottom of the league, ultimately giving them the first overall selection in this past year’s draft. The team grabbed former Duke point guard Kyrie Irving to be the new leader of the offense, as he has quickly transitioned to the NBA style of play.
Irving has started every game from day one and has showed improvement with each passing day. He has no problems taking the ball from coast-to-coast, giving head coach Byron Scott a new fast-break offense to experiment with. Irving is currently averaging 18.9 points, 3.3 boards, and 4.9 assists per game, while providing the team with a true identity on the offensive side of the ball. . He has already amassed ten games with 20 points or more, including 76 points alone in the last three contests. The rookie is shooting an unprecedented 51.1% from the field, along with a strong 82.1% from the charity stripe. Irving has a great cross over and his ability to drive to the hoop is reminiscent of the 2010 MVP, Derrick Rose.
Point guards have always been known for putting up strong assist numbers, but recently there have been an explosion of PG’s that can score as well. Irving has played well against some of the biggest stars at the position in his first year; with 32 points against New Jersey’s Deron Williams, 26 points against Phoenix’s Steve Nash, and 25 points against Charlotte’s Russell Westbrook. This shows that Irving has the ability to hang around with better athletes and also shows that he has the confidence that is coveted so much in the game. His fantasy value has skyrocketed in the past month, making him a true talent and one of the ultimate keepers at the position.
