2014 Fantasy Football Mock Draft and Analysis
Mock drafts are the No. 1 training tool for fantasy football owners. It allows you to try out different strategies as you construct your perfect roster. It's always nice to go in with a plan, but when the owner right before you takes your player, then all bets are off. Entering this mock draft, I went in with a plan to wait on quarterback and load up on running backs and wide receivers. I had the 10th pick out of 10.
Round 1 - Zac Stacy
Round 1 - Zac Stacy
Picks:
Adrian Peterson, LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, Matt Forte, Eddie Lacy, Peyton Manning, Marshawn Lynch, Arian Foster, Calvin Johnson, Zac Stacy
With the 10th pick, I was torn between Stacy and Doug Martin. I like Stacy because of his lack of injury and very little competition behind him. He will be the focal point of the St. Louis Rams offense and will be a top-10 fantasy back.
Round 2 - Demaryius Thomas
Round 2 - Demaryius Thomas
Picks:
Demaryius Thomas, Drew Brees, A.J. Green, Le'Veon Bell, Brandon Marshall , DeMarco Murray, Doug Martin, Aaron Rodgers, Alfred Morris, Andrew Luck
There was no way I could pass on Thomas this year. Even with the addition of Emmanuel Sanders, Thomas is the No. 1 guy for Peyton Manning. He has the opportunity to have over 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns again this year. In a pass-first offense, Thomas is a bona-fide top-five receiver.
Round 3 - Antonio Brown
Round 3 - Antonio Brown
Picks:
Julio Jones, Montee Ball, Dez Bryant, Giovani Bernard, Alshon Jeffery, Jimmy Graham, Jordy Nelson, Ben Tate, Reggie Bush, Antonio Brown
I went with another wide receiver here. I wasn't a fan of the other running backs on the board, so with Jimmy Graham already taken, I took Brown. Like I mentioned, Sanders is with the Broncos. Which means, Brown should get a ton more receptions and compete for a top-five spot in fantasy.
Round 4 - Randall Cobb
Round 4 - Randall Cobb
Picks:
Randall Cobb, Ryan Mathews, Vincent Jackson, Matthew Stafford,Frank Gore, C.J. Spiller, Cam Newton, Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Ellington
Yes, I went with a third wide receiver. Trust me, I wasn't mad. Having three top-10 wide receivers will give opposing fantasy owners nightmares when they have to reach for a WR2 later on. I could have drafted Spiller or Mathews, but their injuries are too much of a risk.
Round 5 - Ray Rice
Round 5 - Ray Rice
Picks:
Pierre Garcon, DeSean Jackson, Trent Richardson, Keenan Allen, Wes Welker, Victor Cruz, Roddy White, Percy Harvin, T.Y. Hilton, Ray Rice
This is where I encountered some problems. It was either take an older running back like Chris Johnson or deal with the two-game suspension. When he returns, he will be the guy in Baltimore. Bernard Pierce may have a role early on, but nothing significant.
Round 6 - Steven Jackson
Round 6 - Steven Jackson
Picks:
Steven Jackson, Julius Thomas, Rob Gronkowski, Chris Johnson, Rashad Jennings, Nick Foles, Michael Crabtree, Stevan Ridley, Robert Griffin III, Torrey Smith
I took Jackson as my RB3. He could fill in for the first two weeks and then be used as a bye-week replacement. The Atlanta Falcons offensive line should be 100 percent in 2014, which bodes well for Jackson and the rest of the offense.
Round 7 - Joique Bell
Round 7 - Joique Bell
Picks:
Vernon Davis, Jason Witten, Jeremy Maclin, Shane Vereen, Cordarrelle Patterson, Seahawks D/ST, Julian Edelman, Russell Wilson, Bishop Sankey, Joique Bell
The Seahawks defense in the seventh round? Wow. Anyway, Bell is splitting time with Reggie Bush pretty much 50-50. Bell had 166 carries with eight touchdowns. He also plays a big part in the passing game. Bell could easily take over if Bush goes down with an injury.
Round 8 - Marques Colston
Round 8 - Marques Colston
Picks:
Marques Colston, Emmanuel Sanders, Sammy Watkins, Jordan Cameron, Reggie Wayne, Toby Gerhart, Michael Floyd, Eric Decker, Colin Kaepernick, Kendall Wright
At this point, I was still waiting for a quarterback. Tom Brady and others were still available. Colston is the No. 1 (or No. 2 if you ask Jimmy Graham) receiver with the New Orleans Saints. He is a nice veteran receiver who could still reach 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns.
Round 9 - Martellus Bennett
Round 9 - Martellus Bennett
Picks:
Matt Ryan, Pierre Thomas, Cecil Shorts, Greg Olsen, Tom Brady, Danny Woodhead, Maurice Jones-Drew, Chris Ivory,
Knowshon Moreno, Martellus Bennett
This is where I began filling in the other offensive positions. The Bears are a top offensive team with Jay Cutler throwing the ball to Marshall, Jeffery and Bennett. While I built up depth at RB and WR, I let the other tight ends fall. Bennett is a top-10 tight end in that offense.
Round 10 - Tony Romo
Round 10 - Tony Romo
Picks:
Tony Romo, Mike Wallace, Anquan Boldin, Panthers D/ST, Philip Rivers, Kyle Rudolph, Golden Tate, Dennis Pitta, Fred Jackson, Terrance Williams
It took 10 rounds, but I finally selected my quarterback. Romo finished as a top-10 quarterback in the last three seasons. With Dez Bryant and Jason Witten, it's hard to mess that up. Plus, he has up-and-comer wide receiver Terrance Williams.
Round 11 - Khiry Robinson
Round 11 - Khiry Robinson
Picks:
Darren Sproles, DeAngelo Williams, David Wilson, DeAndre Hopkins, Jay Cutler, Riley Cooper, Dwayne Bowe, Danny Amendola, Bernard Pierce, Khiry Robinson
I believe Robinson will have a breakout season. The Saints have a plethora of running backs with Thomas, Ingram and Robinson. With Sproles out of the picture, Robinson has the acceleration and power to plow through defenses, but it may be a committee situation.
Round 12 - Greg Jennings
Round 12 - Greg Jennings
Picks:
Greg Jennings, 49ers D/ST, Tre Mason, Hakeem Nicks, Jordan Reed, James Jones, Broncos D/ST, Steve Smith, Charles Clay, Shonn Greene
Jennings has great chemistry with Matt Cassel, but injuries cut his 2013 season short. With focus being put on Cordarrelle Patterson, Jennings could slip under the cracks and find some openings. This may be one of his last seasons as a fantasy-relevant player.
Round 13 - Rueben Randle
Round 13 - Rueben Randle
Picks:
Cardinals D/ST, Darren McFadden, Ben Roethlisberger, Lamar Miller, Rams D/ST, Justin Hunter, Mike Evans, Bengals D/ST, Mark Ingram, Rueben Randle
This was the round of defenses. I could have jumped on the board, but fantasy defenses are a dime a dozen. So I could wait. Randle will enter 2014 as a starting receiver for the Giants. Eli shouldn't be as bad as he was last season. As my WR6, Randle is a nice injury replacement if needed.
Round 14 - Zach Ertz
Round 14 - Zach Ertz
Picks:
Zach Ertz, Andre Brown, Delanie Walker, Andy Dalton, Donald Brown, Tavon Austin, Jeremy Hill, Chiefs D/ST, Patriots D/ST, Aaron Dobson
Ertz is slowly taking over the starting tight end position for the Eagles. He is another player bound for a breakout season. He has the heights and hands to help out Nick Foles in the endzone. If he succeeds as projected, I could trade him or Bennett for receiver or rusher depth.
Round 15 - HOU D/ST
Round 15 - HOU D/ST
Picks:
Matt Prater, Stephen Gostkowski, Justin Tucker, Eli Manning, Mason Crosby, LeGarrette Blount, Steven Hauschka, Ravens D/ST, Steve Johnson, Texans D/ST
J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney? Yes, please. The Texans had a middle-of-the-road defense throughout the season; allowing 26.8 points per game. The team finished as the 28th-best fantasy defense. If the team isn't playing up to potential, then I can just drop them for another team.
Round 16 - Nick Novak
Round 16 - Nick Novak
Picks:
Nick Novak, Phil Dawson, Mike Nugent, James Starks, Adam Vinatieri, Heath Miller, Blair Walsh, Jarrett Boykin, Latavius Murray, Antonio Gates
Kickers should always be drafted last no matter what. However, you shouldn't draft just any kicker. You want a kicker who is on a high-scoring team. The top two kickers were on the Broncos and Patriots. Just like defenses, if your kicker isn't panning out, then pick up a new one.
