Vernon Davis: Injury Woes Should Scare Off Fantasy Owners In Week 5

Vernon Davis Start or Sit Fantasy Football Week 5

Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

If you drafted San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis to be an impact player on your fantasy football roster, there’s no way that you imagined that he would fall out of the top five of NFL tight ends. However, Davis is currently not even in the top 15 among tight ends in standard leagues because he just can’t shake off the injury bug.

In Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys, Davis was on a gold rush as he hunted down two TDs while he was covered by mismatched linebackers. Unfortunately, it’s all gone downhill from there, as Davis has failed to score a TD over the last three games because of injuries that began with a sprained ankle in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears, and subsequent back spasms that put him out of commission in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Colin Kaepernick could really use Davis against the Kansas City Chiefs in a matchup that will feature Alex Smith against the entire 49ers organization, but Davis would really be putting his season at risk if he stepped on the field against the Chiefs’ hard-hitting, eighth-ranked passing defense. Current reports have said that there’s a small chance that Davis might play, but I wouldn’t bet on it if I was his fantasy owner.

In Week 5, play it smart, play it safe — sit Davis even if he gets the green light to play at the last minute. The risk is too high. Besides, you might still be able to pickup TE Niles Paul from the free agent pool, or even Dwayne Allenas I previously mentioned.
