The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins always make for good television. Probably one reason why NBC sports televises their games on every other day and Sunday afternoons 6-4 Flyers win was a definite ratings winner.

Late in the third period, with a Flyers victory well in hand, Brayden Schenn inexplicably cross-checked Penguins oft-injured captain Sidney Crosby from behind –  after the whistle. Crosby, not expecting the hit, landed flat on his face.

In an apparent retaliatory move, Penguins forward Joe Vitale caught Daniel Briere with a clean shoulder hit. The Flyers players and head coach Peter Laviolette didn’t quite see it that way. Laviolette smashed a stick over the glass in anger and all 10 players on the ice went at it.

At one point, Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato and Laviolette angrily exchanged words across the benches as NBC’s bench analyst Pierre McGuire tried to avoid flying globs of spittle.

The entire encounter lasted several minutes and despite all the craziness taking place on the ice, nothing could top what was happening behind the Flyers bench. Throughout the entire scene, a Penguins fan, who was clearly a doppelganger for former WWE legend Hulk Hogan taunted players and coaches on Philly’s bench.

At one point, Flyers class clown Scott Hartnell, began to mock the belligerent wrestling/hockey fan. Hartnell even went as far as to pose for the fan using Hogan’s signature hand to the ear gesture. It was a fitting exchange considering Wrestlemania XXVIII is Sunday night.

Here is a video of the whole scene.

It was a hilarious exchange and it was all caught by NBC cameras. In the end, the Flyers got the last laugh. The win moved their record at Consol Energy Center to 5-0 since it opened in October of 2010.
