The Indianapolis Colts have all but made it official; ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Colts have committed to drafting Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck first overall in the 2012 NFL draft.
You’re crazy if you think that’s not related to Peyton Manning’s recent indication that he will retire at the end of the season. Everybody and their dog has known for six weeks now that Luck would be the Colts’ quarterback of the future, whether it’s in 2012 or after Manning’s contract expires in three years.
Manning may not ever be healthy enough to play football again; three neck surgeries for a 35-year-old quarterback aren’t exactly common. If the Colts choose to honor his new lucrative contract, Manning would be around for three more seasons to groom Luck. The question is: does he want to do that?
Regardless of Manning’s’ future, the Colts have finally admitted they will indeed take Luck first overall in the upcoming draft. Schefter seemed dumbfounded when giving the report, but also confidently stated the Colts would hold the first overall pick when the regular season ends.
That means the Colts can only win two games this year. Indy will most likely be only the second 0-16 team in NFL history, meaning the Colts would have no competition (so to speak) for the top pick. Expect some sort of statement from the Colts on this report in the near future.
