The Indianapolis Colts are trying something different. After the team’s first 0-11 start in 25 years, quarterback Curtis Painter is being benched for veteran journeyman Dan Orlovsky. As if that wasn’t enough, the Colts also fired defensive coordinator Larry Coyer in an attempt to spark the NFL’s fourth-worst defense. Don’t assume these are the last changes to come to the team this season, either.
The Colts will likely fire head coach Jim Caldwell at the end of the year as well before drafting Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. In fact, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is a likely candidate to be the Colts’ next head coach.
As for Orlovsky’s promotion, it’s only temporary. The Colts are just trying something different to appease their fans. Even if Indy goes 0-16, the fans will be a little happier if the team continues to experiment in an attempt to get better.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported this week the Colts have committed to drafting Luck first overall in the upcoming NFL draft. Couple that with FOX Sports’ Chris Myers saying Manning gave him the impression he would retire at the end of the year and you’ve got the formula for a total makeover in Indianapolis.
