NFL Rumors: Jacksonville Jaguars To Play In London In 2013?
New Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan has expressed his desire to make his new NFL franchise an international brand and now he may have a way to bring some international exposure to his team.
On Monday, the St. Louis Rams announced that they were backing out of their commitment with the league to play home games at Wembley Stadium in London in 2013 and 2014 to focus on getting their home in St. Louis up to standard with the top tier of NFL stadiums.
This could potentially open the door for the Jaguars to play a home game in London as early as next season, but will they volunteer to fill the void left by the Rams?
New Jaguars president Mark Lamping said in an interview earlier this offseason that the team had expressed interest to the league in playing in London saying it would be a good marketing tool for both the team and the city of Jacksonville.
Ever since being announced as the Jaguars new owner back in November, Khan has put an emphasis on growing the fan base of his team beyond North Florida and thinks his team can carry the banner for league’s desire to expand into international markets. The Jaguars seem to be stable enough in their home market now to consider shipping off one of their eight home games to London without creating much of a commotion.
All signs are pointing to the extreme possibility that when the NFL reopens its search for teams to play in London in 2012 and 2013, the Jaguars will be the first team to raise their hands.
