NCAA Radar Fixed on the Mississippi State Bulldogs
Nelson Chenault-US PRESSWIRE

A week ago today, news broke of Mississippi State wide receivers coach Angelo Miranda‘s resignation.  Many had to think, what a time for a coach to step down, with the start of the season only two weeks away.  Well, now it has come to light and has been confirmed by the university, they are in the middle of ongoing NCAA investigation into the recruitment of Memphis, Tennessee defensive back Will Redmond.

Redmond, the 5’11″, 175 pound defensive back signed with the Bulldogs in August of 2011. He was ranked by ESPN as the number 22 player in the state of Tennessee during his senior year.

To hear of “recruiting irregularities” coming from the city of Memphis is no surprise to anyone who keeps their nose to the pavement in the recruiting game.  Memphis and recruiting go together like Chicago and their dirty politics.

The subject, or item provided, revolves around a Ford Mustang that was purchased for Redmond shortly before he signed with the Bulldogs.

ESPN college football reporter Joe Schad reported that Miranda’s resignation was a direct result of the ongoing investigation.

Dan Mullen responded to questioning after Thursday’s practice. “I would try to get a little more reliable source than Joe Schad,” Mullen said, “I’m supposed to be coaching at State College, I guess, right now, too, according to Joe Schad last year.  Wasn’t that the case?”

The university did issue a statement regarding the investigation as reported by Brandon Marcello of the Clarion-Ledger.

Over the last several months, Mississippi State has worked in cooperation with the NCAA to examine a potential recruiting irregularity. We are nearing the end of this examination, and it is our intent to provide additional details when it is complete.

It was then announced that Mullen had hired former Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach, Tim Brewster, to replace Miranda and coach the wide receivers for the upcoming 2012 season.
