New York Yankees’ Kevin Youkilis Hurt

Once again, the injury bug has hit the New York Yankees. Kevin Youkilis sat out Wednesday’s night game against the Tampa Bay Rays with tightness in his lower back. The last thing that the Yankees need is another player on the DL.

Alex Rodriguez is out until at least July, and the purpose of signing Youkilis was that the Yankees would have a decent third baseman. If Youkilis ends up on the DL, the Yankees will have to play Jayson Nix at third base —not much of an improvement if you ask me.

I can’t remember the last time the Yankees were so depleted. Half of their starters are on the DL and it’s not even the end of April. When the Yankees signed Youkilis, I liked the move. They were in need of a third baseman and anybody is an upgrade over A-Rod. It’s pretty sad how the player they signed to replace a player on the DL could end up on the DL.

With A-Rod on the DL and Youkilis possibly headed there, the Yankees will not have many options at third. Nix is decent but he is not an everyday player. In 2012, he hit .243 with four home runs and 18 RBIs. If Brian Cashman runs out of options, he could call somebody up from Triple-A.

Then again, maybe I’m just overreacting and Youkilis won’t end up on the DL.

Whatever does end up happening, the Yankees can’t afford to put on more players on the DL. They have too many players who are already on it as it.
