Eric Hosmer Keeps Swinging Mean Bat To Bolster Kansas City Royals’ Wild Card Hopes

Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

It was Eric Hosmer‘s turn to be the hero for the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

The Royals continued their recent surge with an MLB 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers, in a battle of American League Central Division contenders. They have now won 11 of their last 15 games.

Hosmer came through with the big hit. The Kansas City first baseman belted a three-run homer off of Detroit starter Doug Fister with two outs in the fifth inning. His 16th home run was a huge one for the Royals, who are trying to stay alive in the Wild Card race with only 19 games left in the regular season.

For the second straight day, the Royals frustrated the Tigers, who are trying to put the clinchers on their hold of first place.

Hosmer had a big day, with three hits against Tigers’ pitching. He continues to have a splendid season and has his RBI total up to 73. In fact, the Royals got run production out of three key players, including Hosmer, who have been coming up with clutch hits all season. Designated hitters Billy Butler and Alex Gordon, both with more than 70 RBIs this season, had one apiece against the Tigers.

Hosmer continues to be a steady hitter this season, either hovering slightly above or slightly below that .300 mark. The Royals still have some ground to make up and need to keep that winning streak going. They were embarrassed with a 16-2 loss to Detroit on Friday night, but got right back in the Wild Card race with two key wins against the Tigers.

The good news is that Kansas City has shown no signs of cooling off, and neither has Hosmer.
