Chris Sale Able To Tame Miguel Cabrera-less Detroit Tigers In Chicago White Sox Victory

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox is one pitcher who’s happy Miguel Cabrera can’t control his temper lately when umpires call a strike.

It’s one thing for the Detroit Tigers to have to worry about Cabrera being healthy enough to play a full game at third base and get some huge swings at the plate.

But now they have to worry abut their superstar losing his cool on called strikes. The Tigers lost 5-1 to the White Sox on Monday and Cabrera’s temper didn’t help.

Cabrera got tossed for arguing a strike call in the first inning. He claimed the pitch hit his right knee. Replays indicated the ball did hit his knee but umpire Brian Gorman ruled Cabrera went around on his swing and didn’t check with the first base umpire Tony Randazzo. Moments later when Cabrera fouled off a 0-2 pitch, it appeared he may have said something to Gorman who ejected him.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland got ejected also.

It was similar to an ejection against Cabrera in late July.

The problem was it took the best bat in baseball out of the lineup and the Tigers lost their third straight. Cabrera should know by now what happens if he reacts that way. His team is slumping right now and the last thing the Tigers need is for him to be overly insensitive on a strike call. Forget whether or not the call is a good one or not, the umpires rule and they don’t care that Cabrera is the MLB‘s best hitter. They’ve already shown they’re not going to give him any slack.

But give the White Sox credit that they were able to take advantage of Cabrera’s absence and beat Max Scherzer, who was again frustrated in his bid to get win No. 20 and suffered his third loss.

Sale was more than happy not to have to face Cabrera for the rest of the night. He allowed four hits in eight innings of work. Cabrera did Sale and the White Sox a major favor.
