2012 NFL Scouting Combine Day 4 Recap
Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

Day 4 of the 2012 NFL Combine featured player on secondary.  Morris Claiborne was impressive prior to the NFL Combine and did enough to remain a top 5 prospect.

Cornerback Outlook

The three first round cornerback prospects LSU corner Morris Claiborne, Northern Alabama cornerback Janoris Jenkins, and Alabama’s Dre Kirkpatrick are the top 3 cornerbacks in Aprils NFL Draft.

South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore is easily the top ranked second round cornerback prospect.  Gilmore may even warrant a late first round pick if New England likes him.  Gilmore should not slide past the 33rd overall pick at the top of round 2.

Casey Heyward is a 2nd round corner.  Heyward is currently graded as the 5th best corner behind Claiborne, Jenkins, Kirkpatrick, and Gilmore.  Jenkins was a former SEC player with the other prospects being SEC players as well.

Josh Robinson covered AJ Green in Green’s final bowl game with Georgia.  Robinson dominated his 40 time.  Robinson could warrant a round 2 pick.

Alfonzo Dennard, Chase Minnifield, Jayron Hosley, and Dwight Bentley are 3rd round talents that may be day 2 picks.

Iowa cornerback Shaun Prater and Iowa State cornerback Leonard Johnson were both 3rd round talents heading into today.  Both corners failed to impress me at the NFL Combine and moved down to 4th round talents.

Safety Outlook

This is one of the worst safety groups in recent memory.  The two best safeties in my opinion are Alabama’s Mark Barron and Oklahoma State’s Markelle Martin.  Both safeties are 2nd round talents that could play strong safety or free safety.

Notre Dame’s Harrison Smith has the physical skill set of a pro bowl safety, but I’m not sold on his mental instincts as a football player.  I got Smith graded out as a 2nd round talent as well.

Stanford safety Delano Howell and Boise State safety George Iloka are two more safeties to watch in round 3.  Both safeties can play strong safety or free safety.
