“Ooohh, did you hear that Chris Bosh said he hasn’t spoken to LeBron James since his departure? Oh. My. Gosh. We have to talk to LeBron. I mean, it was definitely LeBron not speaking to Chris, right? LeBron is way more popular!” The drama continues, and we lap it up.

That’s what sports have become, though. It’s “Days Of Our Lives” covered in macho cheese.

We loved the Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal melodrama, so we eagerly anticipated the sequel featuring Dwight Howard. Drew Brees and Jimmy Graham aren’t getting along? Oh, well that has to be good for at least a month’s worth of lines that could be read between by even the most illiterate. Don Mattingly hates Yasiel Puig? That one kinda makes sense, actually.

It’s funny. Sports have become about everything but what transpires on the field. Trade deadlines are covered like presidential races. Twitter explodes at the start of any free agency. To quote Dan LeBatard: “The transaction has replaced the action.” We become bored almost immediately with whoever fills our favorite team’s rosters and become frustrated when trades aren’t enacted as quickly as in our fantasy leagues.

I understand part of it. The drama lets us feel closer to the game. By believing in the elaborate narratives we fabricate for ourselves, we can dive into the heads of our favorite athletes. If LeBron angered Bosh enough to not speak to supposedly one of his closest friends, imagine how much harder they’ll play against each other. I mean, as if competition at the highest level wasn’t enough, if the Bosh family underspent on their baby shower present for the James family, the possibilities are endless as to what James will want to do to Bosh on the court. You lose me after that, though.

The drama is addictive and all part of the evolution of sports. Watching the world’s greatest athletes is no longer enough for us. We have to play out their personal lives as well. Just know that in the vast majority of these cases, millionaires move on quicker than we hope. LeBron is back in Cleveland. Bosh loved Miami and the giant paycheck they signed for him. They’re both focused on winning this season to prove doubters wrong. That should be enough, but we all know it isn’t. We’ll sit idly by on the edge of our seat for the next rumor to drive the conversation.

Fortunately for us, it never ends and the rumors get all the wilder. TMZ opened a purely sports-based division with impressive success. I’m just waiting for “OK! Magazine” and the “National Enquirer” to follow suit. Can you imagine the dirt they can dig up? I’m positively shaking with anticipation.

Now, if you don’t mind, I heard Kobe broke Nick Young’s hand on purpose.
