You could say that things keep getting worse for Adrian Peterson. But you could also say that the choices in his personal life are finally catching up to his professional life.
More details from Peterson’s personal life have emerged, and they’re not exactly pretty. The All-Pro running back has been accused of paying for a hotel room in 2011 with a charity credit card, a hotel room allegedly used for an orgy. Eventually, the events of that night led to a sexual assault allegation against Peterson.
In addition, light has been shed on his fathering of children with multiple different mothers in multiple states. Peterson supposedly has at least six children with six different mothers.
Is any of this football fans’ business? Not really. For the most part what a man does on his own time, should be no one’s concern but his. But in this case, when you already have serious allegations of child abuse pending, the latest details of AP’s personal life should all but seal his fate with the Minnesota Vikings. Aka — he’s as good as gone, if he wasn’t already.
There’s just no way the Vikings can take him back. The team has already moved on to a new era with Teddy Bridgewater, and bringing back AP, while it may help in the short-term, is not a long-term solution.
Peterson isn’t owed any more guaranteed money after this season, and right now he’s basically on a paid suspension. Worst-case scenario, the Vikings could cut him in 2015 and only pay a small cap hit of $5.1 million over the next two years.
GM Rick Spielman should do his best to try and trade away his former franchise player, even though it’s unlikely a team will be excited by his current deal (scheduled to pay him over $14 million per season over the next three years). If no team wants to take a chance on the aging superstar, then it’s on to plan B — cutting ties with him altogether.
It’s been a great run for Peterson in Minnesota. He was beloved at one time, and no one will forget his remarkable 2012 season. But it’s clearly best for all involved to start a new chapter in 2015. In some ways, that chapter has already begun.
