Seattle Seahawks Finished Off By NFL Officials In Inexcusable Fashion

Perhaps to the surprise of many, the Seattle Seahawks fell to the St. Louis Rams (28-26). The Hawks had several issues today, primarily on special teams, which cost them the win against St. Louis.

The Rams were greatly aided by a great punt return that led to a touchdown, and a couple of tricks up their sleeves that fooled Seattle. One trick came on a punt return for a score, while the other came at the end. The Rams got in punt formation deep in their own territory, and tricked the Seahawks once more by passing the ball for a first down. Most people probably thought the game was over at this point, but it shouldn’t have been.

While trying to run down the clock, Rams running back Tre Mason ran to the left side and crossed the first-down marker, but he was hit hard from behind and fumbled the ball. Here is where the Seahawks got absolutely screwed.

The officials ruled Rams tight end Cory Harkey regained possession, but instant replay proves otherwise. In fact, it didn’t even look like Harkey regained possession in real-time. Had the officials bothered to take a look at the replay in a crucial moment, which the NFL’s own Mike Pereira said they should have, they would have seen that it was the Seahawks’ Richard Sherman that last had possession of the ball. The right call would have given Russell Wilson the ball with a little over a minute left to try to win the game.

In a year that has witnessed terrible officiating across the league, this one has got to be the absolute worst. It was a very important call that should not have been judged without looking at the replay, but it was, and that is absolutely inexcusable.

The Hawks did themselves no favors, and quite frankly, they don’t look so super right now. They can’t protect Wilson, the defense can’t get to the quarterback, and, at times, they look flat out sluggish. But Wilson put the team on his back, and he may very well have marched the team to victory had he gotten the chance. But he didn’t get that opportunity, and that’s the problem.

These aren’t replacement officials anymore, but it has been just as bad. The NFL needs to fix the problem, and they need to fix it now, because these games are getting hard to watch.
