Chicago Bears Should Strongly Consider Trading Tim Jennings

Finding a good mix of veterans and young players is a goal of every NFL general manager. It’s a delicate balance, and there’s no proper formula to follow. The Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers are testaments to going young. They are the sixth and seventh-youngest rosters in the league, and they are each top teams.

The balancing act gets tricky when general managers must decide when to let go of aging veterans and bring in young talent. The Chicago Bears find themselves on the aging end of the balancing act. They currently have the third-oldest roster, with an average player age of 26.72. Due to injury, retirement and free agency, the Bears did receive an influx of young players in their starting lineups through the 2014 draft, but they are still an old team. It’s time to make some moves before it’s too late.

Atop my list of players the Bears can move is cornerback Tim Jennings. At age 30, Jennings’ best years are behind him. However, his talents are still at a level that can bring value to a team in need, perhaps a contender dealing with injury at the cornerback position. Injury already removed another aging star cornerback from the Bears’ roster when they lost Charles Tillman early in the season. Rookie Kyle Fuller has done remarkably well having been thrown into a starting role opposite Jennings.

Another rookie, Brock Vereen, is poised to step in for Jennings and give the Bears a dynamic pair of young cornerbacks that sets them up for solid play for years to come.

MLB teams do an excellent job of moving around veteran players each year. NFL teams can benefit from doing the same, especially the aging teams and those already over the hill such as the Bears.
