Sunday’s game at Arrowhead Stadium between the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs features two teams heading in completely opposite directions. The Chiefs are coming off of back-to-back victories, while the Jets’ season is effectively over at 1-7. Here are some predictions for this Week 9 showdown.

One of the few bright spots on this team this year has been their running game, which currently ranks fourth in the NFL at 140 yards per game. With Michael Vick taking over for Geno Smith this week, expect the Jets to lean more heavily on the ground game against a Chiefs run defense that has struggled this year. Establishing a good run game is the only way the Jets have a chance to win this game.

4. Alex Smith Has An Extremely Efficient Game

Smith is never going to be one of those quarterbacks that puts up 400-yard, five-touchdown games. What he does very well, though, is take care of the football and make smart decisions. Even against a porous New York secondary, Smith will still play it safe and smart, once again avoiding any critical mistakes.

Injuries have played a major role in Charles’ 2014 season so far, taking away a lot of the game-breaking ability he displayed last season. But Charles has looked like his old self in recent weeks, including in last week’s blowout win over St. Louis in which he finished with 111 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. Charles will have the chance to have an impact both on the ground and through the air.

More than anything else, the source of the Jets’ struggles this season has been their inability to take care of the football. The Jets are 29th in the league in giveaways and dead last in turnover differential. Don’t expect anything different on Sunday, even with the switch to Michael Vick. Kansas City has playmakers all over their defense and should cause plenty of mayhem against New York's punchless offense.

After a big upset over the San Diego Chargers and a blowout win over the St. Louis Rams, the Chiefs have the look of a team that could make some noise in the second half of the season. The Jets, on the other hand, are essentially out of playoff contention before Halloween. Unless something truly crazy happens, the Chiefs should have no problem winning this game at home rather easily.
