The Houston Texans are better than last season thanks in large part to J.J. Watt. Watt has not only been the leader of the defense, but he’s the leader of the team. The 2012 Defensive Player of the Year recipient has been a factor on both defense and offense so far this season.

Watt recorded his first career NFL touchdown playing tight end against the Oakland Raiders on Sept. 14. Watt has recorded two touchdowns since, both on defense. Watt has seven sacks on the season and two interceptions. He has created a buzz around himself and it is only at the halfway mark in the season. Watt is a phenomenal at his position, but what he’s done for the Texans organization needs to be noted as well. Due to the Texans’ horrendous season last year, going 2-14, no one was expecting them to improve this season. The fact that the Texans are .500 on the season shows the improvement of the entire team, but in most of the games the Texans have played, Watt has been the source for energy and efficiency.

The odds are stacked against Watt in the MVP race because he plays defense. There hasn’t been a defensive league MVP in nearly 30 years, the last being Lawrence Taylor in 1986. The MVP award has been coveted by mostly quarterbacks in league history because they have been the game changers for their teams. Watt is the game changer for the Texans, and because of his hard work on both sides of the ball and being the one true franchise player and best defensive end in the entire league, Watt is the NFL MVP at the halfway point.
